Before Your Puppy Arrives
A little preparation goes a long way. Before pickup or delivery day, have these ready:
- Food — ideally the same food your puppy has been eating, to avoid stomach upset from a sudden switch.
- Crate and bedding for safe sleeping and house-training.
- Food and water bowls, a collar and leash, and an ID tag.
- Safe chew toys to soothe teething and keep busy paws occupied.
- Puppy pads or a designated potty spot for those early days.
- A puppy-proofed space with cords tucked away and small hazards removed.
The First Day
Your puppy is leaving everything familiar behind, so keep the first day calm. Let them explore one room at a time rather than the whole house at once. Offer water and a small meal, and give them plenty of quiet time. Resist the urge to invite the whole neighborhood over — a flood of new people and noise can overwhelm a puppy who's still adjusting. Gentle, low-key introductions are best.
The First Night
The first night is often the hardest. Your puppy may whimper or cry — they're missing their littermates. Placing the crate near your bed so they can hear and smell you helps a lot. House-Training and Early Habits
Doodles are intelligent and eager to please, which makes training rewarding — but they're still babies. Keep sessions short and positive. Reward good behavior generously. Start gentle handling of paws, ears, and coat early, since regular grooming will be part of your doodle's life. The habits you build in these first weeks shape the dog you'll have for years.
The First Vet Visit
Schedule a wellness check with your veterinarian within the first few days. It confirms your puppy is healthy, gets you started on their vaccination and parasite-prevention schedule, and establishes a relationship with your vet. Bring any health records your breeder provided.

Every puppy adjusts at their own pace. Some settle in within days; others take a couple of weeks to fully relax and show their personality. Patience, routine, and lots of gentle affection are all it takes. Before long, that nervous little puppy will be a confident, joyful member of your family.
