The Quick Comparison
The biggest difference is size. A Cavapoo is a small dog, while a Bernedoodle can range from medium to very large. If size is your deciding factor, that alone may point you in one direction. Beyond that, both share the gentle, people-loving temperament that makes doodles such wonderful family pets.
Size and Space
Cavapoos are small, typically ranging from about 9 to 25 pounds depending on whether they come from a Toy or Miniature Poodle line. They fit beautifully in apartments, smaller homes, or laps.
Bernedoodles come in several sizes — Tiny, Miniature, and Standard — and a Standard Bernedoodle can reach 70 to 90 pounds or more. They generally do best with more room and, ideally, a yard.
If you have limited space or want a dog you can easily travel with, the Cavapoo has the edge. If you have room to spare and love a bigger companion, the Bernedoodle delivers a lot of dog to love.
Temperament
Both breeds are affectionate and great with children, but they have slightly different personalities.
Cavapoos are eager, cuddly, and thrive on closeness — they often want to be wherever you are. Their Cavalier heritage makes them especially gentle and adaptable, which suits families, seniors, and first-time dog owners well.
Bernedoodles carry the calm, loyal steadiness of the Bernese Mountain Dog blended with the Poodle's intelligence. They can be a touch more independent and are often described as goofy and devoted. Their larger presence makes them a favorite for active families.
Shedding and Allergies
Both breeds are low-shedding thanks to their Poodle ancestry, and both are popular with allergy-conscious families. As with any doodle, the curlier the coat, the lower the shedding tends to be. Neither dog is 100% hypoallergenic, but both are far more allergy-friendly than most shedding breeds. If allergies are a major concern, ask your breeder about coat type for the specific puppy you're considering.
Grooming Needs
Here the two are similar in type of care but different in scale. Both need regular brushing and professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks to keep their coats healthy and mat-free. But a large Standard Bernedoodle simply has far more coat to maintain than a small Cavapoo — which means more brushing time and higher grooming costs. Factor that into your decision, especially with a Standard Bernedoodle.
