A Reputable Breeder Welcomes These Questions
A good breeder wants you to ask questions — it shows you care. If a breeder is defensive, vague, or rushed, that's a red flag. Here's a checklist to bring with you.
Health & Genetics
- Are both parents health-tested and DNA-tested? Can I see the results?
- What specific genetic conditions were the parents tested for?
- Have both parents received OFA or breed-appropriate health clearances?
The Parents & Environment
- Can I meet the puppy's parents (or at least the mom)?
- Where are the puppies raised — in a home, or in a kennel?
- How are the puppies socialized to people, sounds, and everyday life?
Veterinary Care & Health Guarantee
- What vaccinations and deworming has the puppy received so far?
- Has a veterinarian examined the puppy, and can I see the records?
- What does your health guarantee cover, and for how long?
- Are puppies microchipped before going home?
Policies & Support
- What is your return or take-back policy if it ever doesn't work out?
- What comes home with the puppy — records, food, supplies?
- Do you offer lifetime support if I have questions later?
- Can you provide references from past puppy families?
- How long have you been breeding this breed?
If the Answers Are Vague, Walk Away
A breeder who can't or won't answer these questions clearly is a risk to your family and to the puppy. We're proud of our answers to every one of these — and we're happy to walk you through them in detail.
